# SAT - SUN

"Quick wake up. There's something wrong with Lecter's eye.."

I thought Daddy was joking. But I got up anyway.

Lecter's right eye was all swollen, half closed and covered in mucus. What the... When I tried to wipe away the mucus there was blood on the white towel.

Shucks. What happened?

It was already past noon on a Sat. All animal clinics were closed, and there was no emergency unit at Lecter's personal vet. We had to call up other emergency vet numbers that we found online. One of the vet technician suggested that we clean away the mucus and wait til Monday if it wasn't as serious as we made out to be.

As much as we wanted to bring him in, we hesitated. Consultation alone was almost USD100. Lecter seemed to be in no pain... waiting til Mon shouldn't be a big problem. I cleaned away the blood and mucus, and bathed him.

I surfed the web for such conditions and stumbled onto a page where the owner wrote about his 2 dogs which were playing/fighting/barking away in another room. He was occupied and so left them alone. The barking died down. One of them came into his room, sat on his lap and all. He didn't think much of it til the dog looked up at him. One of his eye sockets was empty.

The owner screamed (for a guy that was a pretty big thing I guess). At least that told me one thing. Dogs didn't seem to fuss over pain as much as humans do. I looked at Lecter beside me. Should we..?

Then a medical site. "....... a seemingly petty eye infection could be much more serious than you think.."

"I think we better bring him in."

Daddy concurred readily.

We never made a better decision. Lecter's condition was serious. His eye was hurt (most likely during play) the night before ("the wound wasn't fresh.."). The ulcer in his eye was spreading. He needed an operation, and this can only be done by an eye specialist out of town (in another town), an almost 5 hours' ride away.

We had to wait til Monday to go back to our own vet for further examination. Til then we had to hope the eyedrops and med would ease the pain.
