# LIFE ON THE TRACKS

Dec 15, 2003 [Mon] – Tallahassee to Miami

1st sign of craziness: setting out at 1am in the morning. By 3, we were tired out. By 6, we were delirious, and I couldn’t feel anything in my feet. My hands were numb, like some poorly wrapped up frozen meat in the fridge. I was shivering so badly I took half a min to tear paper off the toilet roll.

Then there was light, literally. We reached South Beach, Miami at almost 4pm. Life on the freezing tracks was over.

Dec 18, 2003 [Thu] – Miami to Key West

We learnt our lesson, setting off in the noon. Even the scenery-starved highways seemed more beautiful. Traveling in the day was a heaven and hell’s difference from traveling at night. I was almost convinced we were outta our mind back then.

Key West was America’s only drive –to Tropical Caribbean Island. A whole stretch of the highway, US 1, was over the waters. The seagulls were flying so low you felt you could reach out and grab one.

I wondered how seagulls taste like.

Speaking of which, I had a taste of grilled dolphin at Key West. It was ironic, that there was a dolphin research and conservation centre and seafood houses featuring dolphins on their menus. Life’s ironies never cease to amaze and amuse me.

Key West had a famous pastry: the Key Lime Pie.

Don’t try it.

Dec 21, 2003 [Sun] – Key West to Tallahassee

I held a marathon concert in the moving vehicle. After 13 hours, all passengers in the car became immune to any kind of sound/noise.

Total distance covered: 1,500 miles
58 times the length of Singapore Island (42km x 23km)

Amazing.
